Vacation Wrap-Up: Drumroll Please...

So, in case you missed it, I went to California last week for vacation. While it was a lovely trip in and of itself (hello, 70 degree weather), something very special happened that will make it one of the best trips EVER. On Sunday, Adam and I headed out early to drive down the Pacific Coast with my friend Marissa. We stopped in Santa Cruz (marveling at people fortunate enough to be wearing bathing suits in March), Carmel (enjoying a glass of wine on the 18th green of Pebble Beach) and finally Big Sur (taking in the beautiful sites of the Pacific coastline).

After a few hours spent in the car choreographing a dance to TLC's 'No Scrubs' (and also making Adam very miserable), the three of us decided to stretch our legs on a hike leading out to a beautiful point overlooking the Pacific in Andrew Molera State Park. When we reached the cliff, Marissa (being the natural photographer that she is) suggested that we walk out to the edge for a picture. After taking in the beautiful landscape, I turned around to find Adam on one knee, asking me to be his wife!

He's crazy!!!!

And of course, I said 'yes'! Well, before I said that, I think I said something to the effect of 'Are you kidding me?'. But when he flashed the ring and it shimmered in the breathtaking California sunshine, I knew he hadn't obtained it from a vending machine. This must be real.

Earth to Lauren, you're being proposed to.

Then of course, I turn around to find Marissa capturing every second of it on camera... non-waterproof mascara and all.

I am a very lucky girl to be spending the rest of my life with my best friend Adam Rust. His love for me is unconditional... tried and true. He makes me laugh. He holds my hand. He forgives me. Sometimes he even lets me throw myself a good old-fashioned pity party. And for all that, I love him just as much in return and can't wait to share my life with him.

Moral of the story? When your boyfriend asks you to wear something nice for your hiking trip, you should probably take a hint and wear something nice (instead of a baseball tee, his old sweatshirt and your ancient Asic tigers).

...You just might be getting engaged.

And of course, they'd been planning it all along!

Hello, Gorgeous: 10 Tips for Loving Yourself!

My brother Cale and I are polar opposites. For starters, he was blessed with a beautiful olive complexion and sports a tan year round (without even trying!). Then there's me with my ghostly pale complexion. Nurses never have any trouble finding my veins for shots. But seriously, physical descriptions aside, we're also polar opposites in the personality department. While I was saving my allowance just for the pure joy of saving my allowance, Cale's was burning a hole the size of the Grand Canyon in his pocket, which provided me with the perfect opportunity to play banker and hike up the interest rates. Then while I would rush home after school to complete my homework (who does that?), Cale was rushing out the door to round up his neighborhood buddies for some good old fashioned after-school fun. Oh...and while I was busy setting goals and making serious life plans, Cale was busy on the couch... relaxing.

My little brother is a professional when it comes to taking care of himself. He doesn't take anything too seriously, and he allows his body the time it needs to rest and recharge. He's basically the expert when it comes to self-care.

We could all learn a thing or two from him.

Setting aside time to love and nourish ourselves is something we all need to do. It's something that I need to work on daily, especially since not much has changed for me since childhood. I'm still busy making plans!

So today, I'd like to leave you with 10 tips for loving yourself...

1. Talk to yourself in the same way you'd talk to someone you love. If you said just half the things you say to yourself to your significant other, you'd find yourself sleeping on the couch. Respect yourself enough to quiet the 'bully' in your head.

2. Buy yourself flowers. Who said you had to wait around for them to show up on your doorstep? Treat yourself to some flowers and when you see them, remember how precious your life is.

3. Practice gratitude. Before you go to bed, make a habit or either writing or thinking about one great thing that happened in your day. Even on a bad day, I bet you'll be able to find something that brought you joy or make you smile.

4. Tune out the gossip and drama. Sometimes the drama inevitably finds us, but other times, we willingly allow that negativity into our lives. Maybe it's the magazine you read or the websites you peruse. If these things make you compare yourself to someone else or induce negative thoughts for you, then trash them. They're not worth your time.

5. Learn to say 'no'. When you have no time left for yourself, it's a clear sign that you're doing too much. Learn to say 'no' to unnecessary commitments. Other people will understand, and then when you do say 'yes', they'll appreciate your time that much more!

6. Perform a random act of kindness. The best way to feel good about yourself is to do something nice for someone else. This is foolproof. Give it a try.

7. Smash your scale to itty, bitty pieces. You've seen the scene in Office Space where they take the baseball bat to the copy machine? Do that. You'll feel much better. The number on your scale is just that - a number! It says nothing about your body composition (your muscle to fat ratio) or how hard you've been working to get those pounds off. Instead of letting the scale dictate your self-worth, learn to judge your progress by the way you feel mentally and physically.

8. Make time for yourself every single day. Whether it's 5 minutes or 2 hours, I don't care. Just make sure you have time to do the things you love... reading before bed, watching your favorite TV show, working on a hobby. These activities allow your mind to relax, and when you're relaxed, your health and outlook inevitably improve.

9. Surround yourself with inspiring people who will love and encourage you. You eventually become like the people you surround yourself with. Choose carefully so that you become the person you want to be, and so you get the love and support you need from your relationships.

10. Make a habit of celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how big or small. You don't have to land a prestigious job to celebrate what you've accomplished. The small things count too! When you've done something good in your life, throw a party or open a bottle of wine with a friend! Take time to celebrate YOU!

Just one last pic... because I couldn't resist! (I'm working on my fitness while Cale, once again, relaxes.)

Give the World A Hug: Join Operation Snail Mail!

snailmail

Good morning, lovely readers! Last week I shared my idea for Operation Snail Mail and since tomorrow is the last day to get involved, here I am to tug at your heartstrings just once more!

Everyone loves getting snail mail, and we all know people who could use a little note of encouragement. So here's what we're going to do... if you'd like to be a part of Operation Snail Mail, drop me an email through my 'Contact Me!' page with 'Operation Snail Mail' in the subject line. In your message, tell me about a person in your life who needs some TLC. I'll need their full name, address and a quick explanation of why they need a note of encouragement. I'll be taking your submissions through the end of the day tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 22nd).

At that point, I'll send you an email with the information for a person you don't know who needs some snail mail love. I'll also include an explanation of the project that you can print and include in your letter.

Then... the rest is up to you! Get out a pen and paper, write something nice, put it in the mailbox and let the US Postal Service take it from there!

Operation Snail Mail will take less than 5 minutes of your time but it's sure to bring lots of joy to a stranger's day! Sometimes we all need to be reminded that we are loved and that the world is a good place.

Will you join me?

P.S. You can go one step further by sharing this post on Facebook or Twitter! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Operation Snail Mail: Help Me Spread the LOVE!

Operation Snail Mail

Surprise! I'm the guest blogger this week! You wouldn't want me giving up this spot when I have something really awesome to tell you, now would you? As you know, this month has been all about the L-O-V-E on my blog, and before February comes to a close, I wanted to do something extra special for the world and I need your help!

Pretty please with a cherry on top?!

Our world desperately needs love. We've reached a point where it's all too common to turn on the TV and hear about another shooting. I can barely read the news anymore for fear of hearing about all the horrible things people are doing to each other. I've lost a lot of faith in humanity, and I don't want to feel this way! So I've created... drumroll please... Operation Snail Mail!

Everyone loves getting snail mail (well, when it's not the utility bills...obviously), and we all know people who could use a little note of encouragement. I'll be taking your submissions through the end of the day next Friday, Feb. 22nd.

Giving doesn't have to come in the form of a monetary donation or a time-consuming volunteer job.

Thank you, lovely readers!

A Happy Balance: Look at Your Food with Love!

Image via sustainabledish.com
Food is not the enemy. I repeat, food is not the enemy! Put your weapons down, people! Being a woman myself, I feel justified in making a generalization about my tribe... we tend to have a very warped view of food. We categorize it into good or bad, high calorie or low calorie, high fat or low fat. We're either reading the label for 20 minutes in the grocery aisle or spending 20 minutes feeling guilty for not reading the label and buying with abandon. Instead of looking forward to meal time, we've made it so complicated that it's no longer fun - counting calories, controlling portion sizes, making sure we have don't exceed our daily sugar limit. Even I'm exhausted!

I'm here today to tell you that it's OK to enjoy your food. You can even stare at it longingly the way you'd stare at your 6th grade crush. I promise it won't bite (on the contrary, you'll be the one doing all the biting). Your body needs nourishment to function. It is wired to experience cravings. In fact, that's your body's way of signalling to you that you're lacking in something.

You can leave the guilt at the door when you feed your body real food and understand that only real food will stifle these cravings. Here are a few tips to help you hone the mind-body connection at the dinner table...

Image via vegnews.com
EAT WITH JOY - We've all been there... there's a big test coming up or a daunting presentation at work and your stomach is in a big, fat knot. There's no doubt that your emotions have a direct impact on your physical state, especially digestion. Studies have shown that when you're sad or angry, your digestive system slows down considerably. On the contrary, when you eat with joy, your body will accept the food more readily and digest it properly. If you sit down to a meal filled with guilt, your body will take it's cue and respond appropriately, that's why it's so important to eat with joy and enjoy your food!

JUST RELAX - Meal time in America is no longer a special affair. I remember watching Leave It to Beaver (man, I feel old) and everyone was dressed for dinner in their Sunday best. Now while there's no way I'm putting on pearls for spaghetti night (sorry, Adam), I do believe that this concept is reflective of a very healthy attitude towards eating. The digestive system is better equipped to do it's job when we are relaxed and focused on enjoying our meal in the company of our family and friends. Instead of having to allocate resources to other areas of the body as you eat 'on the run', the body can pay full attention to the digestive process, leaving you feeling nourished and satisfied.

STOP BEFORE YOU'RE STUFFED - As I've mentioned before, it's best to stop eating before you're stuffed. When you overeat, the body has to direct all it's energy towards digesting this massive line of food waiting to pass through the digestive tract. You know that feeling of stagnation and lack of energy you have after a big meal? Well, your body is using all it's energy to digest this massive quantity of food. Do you really expect there to be any left for you? Stop before you're stuffed.

Image via flickr.com
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY - When your body is lacking in a particular nutrient, it sends a message to your brain which in turn, results in a craving. Cravings are a biological urge to ensure that you get the foods you need. For example, when you're craving carbs, your body is telling you it needs energy. Stop feeling guilty about the craving and give your body what it wants. Just remember that your body is asking for good carbs like root vegetables or whole grains, not the kind with no nutritional value whatsoever - refined bread, white rice, etc. When you eat these things, your body won't be satisfied and you'll be right back where you started.

It's time we gave our bodies the love and respect they deserve. There's no complicated equation when it comes to eating. When you are eating real food and doing it in a relaxed, appreciative state, your body will take care of the rest!

And just in case you wondered how I fared in Blizzard Nemo...

Minus the longest line I've EVER seen at Trader Joe's...

...and my complete inability to catch a cab home with my heavy load,

It turned out OK, when I woke up to THIS Saturday morning! Sooo pretty!

Flash Those Pearly Whites: Spread the LOVE!

I visited New York City for the first time during my sophomore year of college. Courtney B. Minton (yes, the 'B' is important), my very best friend and former hall mate in the dorm, accompanied me on my adventure. The trip was EPIC. We saw a hit-and-run up close and personal, made our TV debut during a shout-out on MTV's Total Request Live, tried (and failed miserably, I might add) at buying a fake I.D. in Chinatown, accidentally ate someone else's dinner at a communal-style meal on Canal Street and met some real live New York City firefighters, who subsequently snuck us into a club since our fake ID attempt was a debacle. But that is neither here nor there (sorry, mom and dad!).

The one thing that stuck out to me on my New York trip was that no one was smiling! Not one person.

Courtney and I decided it was our mission to fix this horrible crime against humanity. We hit the streets early (while bagel-hunting for breakfast), and made a valiant attempt to smile and say 'good morning!' to everyone we passed. It went something like this -- Good morning! Good morning! Good morning! - gasp for air - Good morningggggg! So many people! So little time!

Me and the infamous Courtney B. (aka. Trouble with a Capital 'T')
It worked though! People started to smile, after recovering from their confusion, of course. It was emotional contagion at its best. Emotional contagion is the simple concept that says emotions are, in fact, contagious. This concept is painfully obvious in children. When a young child falls down and scrapes their knee, they often look to their parent for a reaction. You look horrified... they scream bloody murder. You speak to them in quiet, soothing tones... they calm down. It's emotional contagion for dummies.

We have a tendency as humans to mimic the non-verbal cues expressed by those around us. If a co-worker woke up on the wrong side of the bed, suddenly your day may seem a little less than stellar. If your significant other comes home from work with their panties in a wad, you can count on the onset of a crappy mood, followed by a crappy evening, possibly leading into a crappy morning. But if your friend meets you for lunch giving off positive vibes and sharing uplifting thoughts, you, my friend, will leave lunch feeling like you just won the lottery.

This should excite you because it means YOU have the power to cause physiological changes in the people around you. While doing them a favor, you're also causing changes in your OWN body at the same time. Studies have shown that when you give a Duchenne smile (an authentic smile categorized by your eyes wrinkling and your pearly whites flashing), you start to experience the health benefits automatically. Your body releases serotonin and dopamine (the 'happy' hormones), your immune system gets a boost, your stress levels subside and your blood pressure comes down.

Just the simple act of allowing your face to express a positive or negative emotion has physiological affects on your body. When your nose creases and your eyes narrow (aka. the angry face), your adrenaline kicks in and your heart rate changes. Likewise, when the corners of your mouth turn upwards and your eyes brighten, the 'happy' hormones set in. You can basically trick your body into being happy just by controlling your facial expressions.

Yeah, that's right, we're gettin' all hippie up in here today! Monday is one of those days that's short on smiles, so I ask you today to go forth and spread the vitamin L (that's short for LOVE)! Or, as my favorite bumper sticker says, 'Live the life you love'. People will notice your smile and be inspired to follow suit.

Today, I'd like to leave you with something I wrote a few years ago that seems to apply to our topic perfectly. So read it while sipping your morning coffee and give that 'case of the mundays' a run for it's money.

Hate is such a strong word.
It should never leave the tongue.
It tears into the heart, my friend,
And cannot quickly be undone.
The heart that feels it, festers,
Crumbles 'till it dies.
And when the heart is dead, my dear,
No pain it can disguise.

Love's the language of the wise.
It bolsters and it listens.
It rarely finds a fault, my friend,
And quickly offers forgiveness.
The heart that shows it, swells,
Grows until it bursts.
And when the heart is full, my dear,
It will never put itself first.

Compassion's a gift to hurting hearts.
It always comes in time.
It understands a wrong, my friend,
And rarely chooses to remind.
The ones that lives it, learns,
Reaps the blessings given.
And when they need compassion, my dear,
It always declares them forgiven.
